Against this backdrop, our active participation in the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) reinforces our commitment to international best practices and to the development of robust, safe and high-quality construction hoists. At ALBA (Canopy Brands Europe), we are committed to prevention-oriented engineering, where every component, every safety system and every manufacturing process is designed to ensure structural integrity, operational continuity and comprehensive protection for workers in the most demanding jobsite environments.
Construction Hoists: Standards, Safety & Compliance
Construction Hoists are subject to strict safety requirements due to their intensive use and the loads they handle. At Canopy Brands Europe, we design every ALBA rack and pinion unit with a comprehensive safety approach, enabling us not only to meet but anticipate to British market standards.
Their regulatory compliance is not limited to BS EN 12159, which regulates passengers and material hoists, but they must also comply with the planning and temporary design criteria set out in BS 5975, as well as a rigorous inspection and maintenance regime to ensure compliance with LOLER 1998 (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations). The equipment must bear the UK CA mark.
Furthermore, in order to operate onsite, the machinery must incorporate redundant safety systems that exceed the minimum regulatory requirements. These include a dual braking system, consisting of: a mechanical service brake and a speed limiter with an independent emergency brake.
Likewise, limit switches and electrical interlocking systems on the doors, designed to prevent any movement in the event of non-compliance with safety conditions. This includes verification of the complete perimeter protection of the mast, ensuring that the lift remains immobilised in the event of any breach of the established safety measures.
A Rigorous inspection regime
One of the distinguishing factors in the British market is its demanding supervision and certification protocol. Unlike other regulatory environments, initial commissioning must be carried out by an engineer with specific qualifications, who is responsible for validating and documenting the entire process: from structural calculations and anchor design to load testing and functional verification.
In this context, the operation of construction hoists requires constant technical coordination between operators and engineering managers, as well as structural certification of the anchors, which must be assessed and approved by competent professionals.
Once in operation, the equipment is subject to a clearly structured continuous control system:
- Weekly inspections carried out by the operator.
- Comprehensive six-monthly examinations carried out by a competent person.
- Annual certification issued by a recognised organization.
In addition, any relevant incident or substantial modification to the equipment automatically invalidates the current certification, requiring immediate recertification before service can be resumed. This approach ensures traceability, technical control and sustained regulatory compliance over time.
Committed to safety with IPAF
At Canopy Brands Europe, we see requirements of the UK not as a barrier, but as a competitive advantage. Complying with the most rigorous standards allows us to access high-demand markets and position our construction hoists as international benchmarks for reliability and safety.
As members of IPAF, we actively participate not only in regulatory developments and the development of increasingly safe solutions, but also by sponsoring events such as IPAF Elevando 2026, where we were able to give a presentation on everything mentioned here. This type of action reinforces our commitment to safety, actively contributing to industry dialogue, the exchange of technical knowledge and the development of standards that will shape the future of safety in solutions for transporting people and materials on jobsite.
